VAR and retaken penalty save blushes for  Wendie Renard and France in laboured win over Nigeria

Host wins all three group games, hope remains for Nigeria. Wendie Renard of France scored her team's first goal during the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup France group A match between Nigeria and France at Roazhon Park on Monday in Rennes, France.

France will now wait to see which third-place team it will be facing in the round of 16, while Nigeria will have a few nerve-wracking days as it waits to see if it will be advancing as one of those aforementioned third-place teams.

Chiamaka Nnadozie is devastated and has her teammates consoling her. Nigeria has to take the positives away from the game today and those, there are plenty. If Nigeria does manage to advance the round of 16, Chikwelu will be suspended due to yellow card accumulation.

It was a far from convincing 1-0 win and almost a complete disaster for Wendie Renard, who followed up her own goal in the match against Norway by missing her penalty. Luckily for her, the Nigeria goalkeeper came off her line too quickly, giving Renard a second chance to seal the win.

Corinne Diacre promised changes this match and she stuck to her word, replacing four who started against Norway, including Eugenie Le Sommer, who was at risk of suspension.

However sure the France head coach was ahead of the match that her less experienced players were up to the challenge, the first half suggested otherwise. Viviane Asseyi, starting in her first World Cup tie was mistiming runs and passes, proving a weak link in a team that seemed to have lost the flow they displayed in their opener.

This was an unconvincing display by Corinne Diacre's side against a team ranked 38th in the world, with France guilty of wasteful finishing before late drama in Brittany.

The initial penalty - awarded after a video assistant referee review for a foul on Viviane Asseyi - hit the post. But keeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was judged to have moved off her line early and Renard slotted the re-taken spot kick. Nigeria still have a big chance of making the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.

France, meanwhile, head to Le Havre to play a last-16 tie against, as yet, unknown opponents on 23 June.
